December 18, 2009 ![]() NEW POSTCARD: "tsavo lion" + "throttling grip" Tsavo ("place of slaughter"), Kenya is home to some famous maneless lions. In the late 19th century, some of these lions were responsible for vicious attacks on humans building a railroad from Kenya to Uganda. Colonel John Patterson, who killed the lions wrote a book chronicling the events. Bruce Patterson of the Chicago Field Museum (where the lion skins now reside) wrote a riveting analysis on the attacks, "The Lions of Tsavo : Exploring the Legacy of Africa's Notorious Man-Eaters". In this book Patterson discusses how human intrusion lead to abnormal behavior in these lions, provoking them to go on this grim escapade. Patterson also postulates on why the lions of the Tsavo region are maneless. It's from this text that I drew my inspiration for this piece, hence its search term title, "tsavo lion" + "throttling grip". As always, please email with your snail mail address if you'd like a postcard, free of charge. International requests are welcome, as well.
AUGUST 18, 2009 ![]() Lovely By surprise. If you've delved into the pages of this website, you may well know that I worked on a film for the director Kirt Gunn (see "Work" section of this site). His brilliant directorial debut "Lovely By Surprise" is now out on DVD and well worth viewing or owning. My role was a broad one- from credits, the DVD and title treatment and promotional materials, to objects that served as props in the film. I won't be a spoiler by citing them, but if you watch the film I am sure you can figure it out. "Lovely By Surprise" stars Carrie Preston as a writer named Marian, who in her attempt to write her first novel loses herself in the fiction she's trying to create out of her tragic past. It's touching, sad and funny - a lot of emotion chocked into 2 hours, and well worth it. The carefully considered queues that build connections in the storyline create a landscape of Marian's imagination colliding with her reality. Also starring Austin Pendleton as Jackson, Marian's mentor and a bitingly witty performance by Kate Burton as his wife. Reg Rogers plays a sympathetic car salesman, and Richard Masur is his boss. Michael Chernus and Dallas Roberts are Marian's underdeveloped childlike characters, and Lena Lamer beautifully plays a little girl struck speechless by tragedy. After you've watched the film, check out the commentary by Kirt, Reg Rogers, and Michael Chernus. Amongst the 4th wall mustache jokes, is a unique insight into the film's production and the creator's sense of humor. The film was edited by Jim Helton, and Steve Yedlin was the Director of Photography. A lot of amazing talents took part in this film, and it was an honor for me to participate in such a beautiful piece. Buy Lovely By Surprise at Amazon... Get Lovely By Surprise at Blockbuster... March 22, 2009 ![]() SXSW: "Courtroom" visuals for keynotes. I've been involved with SXSW for a number of years, but this time was a little different. I was asked by Shawn O'Keefe to be a courtroom artist, or graphic recorder for 2 of the keynotes. The paper drawings were each a whopping 4 ft by 8 ft large, and I was drawing by audial observation - responding to the remarks of the speakers on stage. Each keynote was roughly an hour long. It was quite an honor to graphically represent the ideas of these great thinkers. Clockwise above: Me drawing in the foreground, with Guy Kawasaki and Chris Anderson in the background, A section of the complete piece created during the Virginia Heffernan / James Powderly keynote, and a section of the piece created during the Kawasaki / Anderson keynote. When I find links to these keynotes, I'll post them here. They are well worth a listen. View the entire piece created during the Heffernan / Powderly keynote... View the entire piece created during the Kawasaki / Anderson keynote... I asked Virginia Ingram and Leslie Kang to take photos of my work in progress, and you can view them at the links below. In a pre-packaged world, I think organic process is important. View Heffernan / Powderly piece in progress... View Kawasaki / Anderson piece in progress...

May 31, 2008 ![]() MY HOME 2.0 For the past 9+ months I've been working with Campfire as the CD (design and ID) for a colossal campaign for Verizon FiOS. My Home 2.0 is an ever expanding trinity of web content, live events, and broadcast media created to show the value of the high speed connection that FiOS provides - all hosted by 3 Techno-Gurus. Whew! I can't believe I fit 9 months into one sentence! Check out the fabulous website - props to the Chopping Block. You can watch the show there, look at reveal photos and .movs (the families experienced their new makeovers at a large Block Party, broadcasted live on a jumbotron for friends and neighbors to share the excitement), and read the thoughts of the families before, during, and after their makeovers. Also check out the witty writings and reportings of the builds by the second funniest person I have ever met, Jim 2.0. He's great at giving a bird's eye view of the painstaking (and funny) process of creating a reality show. Each makeover yielded techie DIYs; to mention a few, a bat cave, a shadow wall, and a car couch. We've also got some fun non-show related DIYs, including a Solar Cell Phone Charger, a Light-up Book Cover, and much much more to come! We also created a wiki that allows for folks who have FiOS to jump in and share "tips, tweaks, instructions and other resources useful to FiOS users, which may not be available on official Verizon sites". You'll see my influence throughout, but one nugget that you may miss (that I really enjoy), is the animated teaser. Created by me and my pal Andrew and animated by Miguel Delcan for Click, who helped us out with animation for the show open and additional DIY packaging. There's much more to unfold on My Home 2.0, including 3 new episode w/ new guru Allison Lewis. Props to my uber talented college pal Yury Gitman for helping us find her. More super cool DIYs are coming up very soon, too. So enjoy it! And visit it often!

March 4, 2008 ![]() AUNG SAN SUU KYI GOOD magazine featured a shirt I designed for be+cause colaborations. The shirt celebrates the courageous Burmese pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. The design is available on BE+CAUSE's website in v-neck and tunic, as well as baby onesie styles. The March issue of GOOD is available on newstands now. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of designing the ID for Deyden and Erin of be+cause, and I was thrilled to work with them again on this t-shirt.
January 15, 2008 ![]() JAPANESE T-SHIRTS Japanese t-shirt company Graniph has licensed my art for some lovely t-shirts. The 4th piece they have printed is from my "Protea" postcard. July 20, 2007 ![]() MTV.COM MTV has asked graphic designers and artists to do logo treatments for the website. It was quite an honor to do this, given that I grew up admiring the strange and artistic nature of many of their IDs.
